Miyamoto used “donkey” to convey “stubborn” in English; while “Kong” was just a generic term for large apes in Japan, the name Donkey Kong was intended to convey “stubborn ape” to the American audience. When he suggested this name to Nintendo of America, people laughed, but the name stuck.
The origin of Donkey Kong’s name
When developing the “Donkey Kong” arcade game, Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto thought “Kong” meant gorilla in English. He wanted to use “Kong” as the last name and came up with “Donkey” as the first name, which he thought meant “stupid” in English.
Donkey Kong was originally part of the Mario franchise, as Mario debuted with Donkey Kong in his original arcade games.
Donkey Kong has been a huge success for Nintendo to date. Universal’s King Kong game was released over 24 years later after Donkey Kong was in the market. The game was created and made available after the 2005 King Kong movie. The game was created by Ubisoft collaboration with the movie director and Universal Studios.
The family is initially formed by Cranky Kong’s great-grandfather. When Cranky married Wrinkly Kong, the family raised a son named Donkey Kong Jr.. DK Jr. became the father of Donkey Kong, the current family leader.
Donkey Kong and his family must venture across five islands to save their home, Donkey Kong Island, after it is frozen over by the villainous Snowmads—a group of invaders from the northern seas.

Donkey Kong, also known as Donkey Kong Sr., is the titular main antagonist of the Donkey Kong arcade games, serving as the titular main antagonist of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong 3, and the deuteragonist of Donkey Kong Jr. He later appears as Cranky Kong in the Donkey Kong franchise.
Donkey Kong has never been the cause of his own death across the myriad of gaming iterations in which he appears. However, he does rank as a bruising enforcer across the Nintendo landscape who relies on his brawn over his brains. That doesn’t mean he’s not somewhat intelligent.
Donkey Kong was a reversal of fortune that ultimately launched a line of games in which Jumpman came into his own as Mario, joined by his brother Luigi. And it helped usher in a new age of gaming — one that has since seen nearly as many ups and downs as Jumpman himself.

Cooper named his monster ‘Kong’ his reason was that the name sounded mysterious. It may have been a simple reference to the Congo; the monstrous monkey is ‘King of the Congo‘ by this account ( = according to this theory). … Confusingly, the name of the river comes from a Bantu word for “mountain”!
