The burial parties put the bodies in shallow graves or trenches near where they fell — sometimes Union and Confederate soldiers together. Others, found by their comrades, were given proper burials in marked graves.
The soldiers in the graves did not have ID tags, which did exist during the Civil War, but a variety of clues found in their graves, including forensic data from analysis of the bones at the Smithsonian Institution, helped identify the soldiers.

In the Union army, black contrabands accompanying the army usually got this job, burying the dead with their uniforms, under cloths or in pine boxes as time and available resources allowed.
However in the subsequent days, when the burials became more organized, a new procedure took place. Burial parties consisted of three men, two to carry the stretcher and one man to work the Pike Pole, the instrument used to push the bodies onto the stretcher.

And that was what he did throughout his career as a Confederate soldier. His inclination always was to take the offensive, always was to deny the enemy the ability to dictate the action.
For example, when Lee’s troops were outnumbered by Union soldiers, he often broke a widely-acknowledged strategy rule: do not divide your troops, keep them together. For Lee, many of his strategies were high-risk, but offered the promise of an equally high reward.

A signal mortar shell was fired from Fort Johnson over Fort Sumter. Firing from surrounding batteries soon followed, starting the battle. A Virginia secessionist, Edmund Ruffin, claimed to have fired the “first shot” of the battle and the Civil War.
While some visitors to the Gettysburg National Military Park thought they saw vandalism to a monument Wednesday, park officials said visitors actually saw a part of the cleaning and preservation process.
